Brie’s response to people saying that ‘she looks really serious and doesn’t even smile’ in the CM trailer……. which is the equivalent of “you should smile more! 🙂 you’d be prettier :)” and honestly they can choke on their own smile… we stan an icon
dear lord, the sheer inanity of her needing to smile for some people is just too much. The response just barely balances the scale that it came up at all. It is hilarious, though.
I hate how quickly my brain can switch from good to bad. I was having a good day; I put out two chapters yesterday and I was making serious progress (with lots of ideas for future stuff) on multiple other ones today and everything was going well.
Then bam! My partner texts me to say he has a flat tire, and he’s upset because we’re strapped for cash and we can’t really afford this but he works out of town so it’s not like we can afford NOT to fix it because he’ll have no way to get to work. And then I get not one, but two different people messaging me to tell me that I’m asking way too much for my writing commissions (I mean, who do I think I am? George R.R. Martin?) and would I consider writing for less because they love my stuff but god no one’s gonna pay what I’m asking …
And it’s just like, fuck it, what’s the point? I just want to make money doing this thing I love, but that’s going nowhere and while I’ve got other skills they’re not in high demand (well, it’s more like there’s more supply than demand where I live) and I can’t afford to go back to school for retraining so … fuck it. Just seriously, fuck it, fuck this, and fuck this stupid depression/anxiety that makes everything so much harder than it needs to be.

Oh my god, after more than a week of my brain refusing to string words together in a cohesive manner I finally just sat down and wrote, and now I have two different chapters to put out today! One from Spy Games and another from Immortals. (And yes, I’m working on the F!Bounty Hunter/Torian fic, too, although I don’t think it’s ready to go up quite yet.)
Go me!
Not to be all “tooting my own horn” here, but I did actually put up two chapters today.
A lot of authors have this concern, that saying ‘thank you’ to more than one person or using a similar thanks each time is somehow not good enough. You just said yourself that every time you read “this is cute” you love it and blush. Well, every reader who gets a personal “thank you” from an author they admire feels the same way.
Just because we have a limited number of ways to say “thank you” doesn’t make it any less sincere. And it certainly doesn’t make it any less appreciated on the other side 🙂
I find it interesting how sometimes in these fanfic writing discussions it almost seems like the writers’ imagination would stop right at the end of writing the fic itself. I am referring to the posts about how hard it is to think of a title, or a summary, or tag, or reply to comments, and so on.
By writing a whole fic the writers have already shown that they have imagination and creativity and can think of things to say – so how does it seem to abruptly stop once the fic is written? Aren’t these things just continuations of creativity?
Writing a fic is a creative endeavor, the title, tags, and summary are MARKETING…which most of us introverted writers are terrible at. Self-promotion isn’t a forte. And if we don’t do it correctly, then no one reads our fic, which is an added layer of pressure to get it right. I need to be clever and catchy and read the mood of my fandom to make sure it jives with how peeps are feeling. I have to make sure my title isn’t the same as any other recent or a well-known fic, it needs to be eye-catching and relevant.
Does the summary reveal enough? But not too much so readers want more?
In the tags did I remember all the correct relationships and characters? Did I mention the things that might reel readers in or that they might remember about the story later if they’re coming to look for it? Are they clear and concise? Are the correct squicks tagged so I don’t surprise someone?
Review responses also aren’t creative, it’s social interaction and now we’re back to introvert writer tries to not be totally weird and awkward and ACK…SOCIAL ANXIETY, but I know that it means a lot to me readers for me to respond, so I do, because I want my readers to know how much they and their comments mean to me.
So the aftercare of a fic isn’t the same as writing, it’s the sloggy part, but we do it anyway because we love our stories and want them to succeed.
